The National Wool Museum, located in Drefach Felindre and part of Amgueddfa Cymru – Museum Wales, is an expression of the history of the wool industry in Wales. It is housed in the Cambrian Mills which, built on the site of a former small water-powered weaving workshop in 1902, is part of the national heritage together with the village of Drefach Felindre. Initially named Museum of the Welsh Woollen Industry (1976), since 2004, after a two-year restoration costing 2 million pounds financed in part by the Heritage Lottery Fund, it has been renamed National Wool Museum. The restoration included a glass-roofed courtyard, a new gallery housing the National Flat Textile collection, a series of historic machines and an elevated walkway offering views of the textiles being produced at Melin Teifi, the site’s commercial wool mill. A research and collections centre was also opened in 2005, including a dedicated learning room. The refurbishment is part of a £40 million museum strategy, launched by the National Assembly Culture Minister for Wales, which includes the National Wool Museum, the National Slate Museum at Llanberis and the Big Pit National Coal Museum at Blaenavon, as well as the development of the new National Waterfront Museum in Swansea.
