The birth of artificial fibers is due to a discovery by the chemist Christian Friedrich Schönbein. In 1846, in his laboratory in Basel, Schönbein subjected cotton to a treatment with a mixture of nitric acid and sulfuric acid and obtained guncotton, from which filaments were subsequently made.
