Used for millennia and originating from the Far East, ramie or ramie is a natural textile fiber aesthetically very similar to silk and extremely expensive thanks to a particularly complex extraction process. Its color ranges from white to gray to greenish, it is shiny, soft, fresh to the touch and is more resistant than linen, cotton or wool. However, its qualities are also other: it does not shrink, it keeps its shape perfectly, it dries very quickly, it does not get damaged even if subjected to frequent washing, it does not discolour despite exposure to the sun, it is easily removable and can also be washed at high temperatures without deteriorating. Often used in combination with other natural or synthetic fibers to improve its resistance or shine, it has a very versatile nature, so much so that it is used for the creation of fine furnishing fabrics (tablecloths, napkins, pillowcases and fine blankets) and for clothing to the production of fishing nets or sails. The gem? In Korea, ramie is also used to make traditional clothes and small lucky objects.
