A passion for weaving that developed during her university studies, but began as a child, when, with the help of her mother, she sewed and made her own clothes. This passion, along with others, continues to be explored by Jemima Godfrey today. “In addition to making clothes, I also learned to knit, which I continue to do in my spare time,” explains the recent graduate with honors from the University of Huddersfield with a degree in Textile Sciences. Tollegno 1900 also played a role in her final project, supplying her with its iconic Harmony yarn.
What inspired you to create your final project?
Nature, particularly mushrooms, has been not only an inspiration but also a significant guideline in shaping my ideas. My final university project, titled “Interwined: Weaving the Fungal Matrix,” relied on double-weave techniques and scanned carpet designs to interpret textures, folds, and surfaces using different fibers and yarn constriction. The curved and pleated weave structures create multiple differences in both surface level and shape. This result is further amplified by the use of merino wool and mercerized cotton.
How does your collection actually come together?
My final collection includes 13 pieces: 4 interchangeable double-weave cushions, 6 curved blankets, and 3 rugs, all of which I professionally made.
To create them, you chose Harmony yarn by Tollegno 1900. What characteristics made it ideal for your project?
The weight and softness of Harmony 2/30 yarn are so incredible they’re unmatched. It’s the only way to bring my creations to life.
Before choosing them as your “partner” for this project, were you familiar with Tollegno 1900?
I discovered Tollegno 1900 at university because the brand makes its yarns available to the university. After experiencing Harmony 2/30 firsthand, I immediately wanted to learn more. I conducted targeted research and gathered useful information on how you dye yarns sustainably. This is a fundamental value for further coherence in my project, which makes the green aspect a key element.
After completing your training, what are your plans for the future?
I’ve been given the opportunity to continue working where I completed my internship year, Calderdale Carpets, as a Junior Designer. I’m sure it will be a very useful training ground!
